india.arie @ paradiso, amsterdam

i greatly admire india arie's previous works, acoustic soul and voyage to india. i think her lyrics are so honest and genuine. in my opinion, her latest album testimony: vol. 1 love and relationship is her best work yet. i have been listening to it for almost a couple of months and i haven't gotten tired of it! i thought it would be nice to see her perform live (and acoustic!) sometime.

and... she came to amsterdam!

she began with a few numbers from her newest album and she was amazed that the audience could sing along to the songs that had just been released a couple of months ago. many times she just stopped singing and jumped joyfully, saying "i can't believe it...y'all know my songs already!"

she is a great storyteller through her music and it made her live performance so intimate. it is so nice to see an artist who really does not need to rely on anything else than her talent to sing and write music. wearing a dress that her mother made and minimal make up, she was still able to have a spectacular production!

a little, useless note: the day before the concert i was lucky enough to get a ticket to india.arie's sold out concert. when people were willing to bid (on marktplaats) 100 euros for a ticket, i got it for 22! yay! ;)

shelby is a new york based photographer whom i met in jakarta at the wedding of my friend, yuli. check out his professional work as well as pictures he took on our trip to bali (2001)

paulinho moska

it's another sleepless night while i'm trying to fall asleep listening to some music. my iTunes is playing my collection of brazilian numbers and i just listen to a voice that i really adore. it belongs to paulinho moska.

i really don't know much about his works, other than the fact that i enjoy listening to his voice on a few songs from the soundtrack of women on top (sabor da paixao). to me it's one of my top 5 favorite movie soundtracks (note: soundtracks, not movies). i haven't gotten tired of the entire album even after 6 years! tune to falsa baiana, nos bracos de isabel, sonho meu and cinzas, and tell me if you think his voice is incredibly soothing and sexy. i don't understand what the songs actually say (they may as well be sad and depressing), but for all i know his voice on these numbers just makes me think of a relaxed, happy, and carefree day. perhaps portuguese also adds to its allure...;) considering how much i love brazilian music and how extremely i romanticize brazil, i wonder why i have not attempted to learn portuguese!

so tonight... or actually... this morning.. i google paulinho moska. i try to find out more about his other works, but then i run into his collection of photos he had taken. i must say that that they are quite original. an artist with a beautiful voice and an edge for photography.

have a moska day!

live 8, palais de versailles, paris

i had been looking forward to go to paris. first of all, because the last time i visited was when i was 11 [yep.... that was a looooooooooong while ago], second of all, i get to visit my friends brava, as well as lusti and her husband edwin. it just so happened that i could get a pretty cheap thalys ticket on the weekend that the live 8 concert was held. a summer weekend just can't be better than that.

people are people

I am the one who believes in all that you say
I am the one who never wants to define herself
I am the one who’s paralel, upfront, behind
I am the one paddling like crazy through the night

Refine, old time, colourblind
Big sign, do time, doesn’t rhyme
A lot, too much, standing tall
And I’m crying in the valley:
“I shall never, ever fall!”

People are people and I feel so strong
People are people and I’m going on

I am the one who stirs it up everytime
I am the one who never knows how close she is
I am the one who’d rather be dead than confess
I am the one trying to be good, wanting to be bad and so on

Excess, temptress, big mess
Phoney, lonely, it’s a test
Be still my heart, don’t you fail
And I’m crying on the stagefloor:
“I will always prevail!”

I’m going on…

"how much?" i am suddenly awake
"i took care of the ticket. so, what's the word?"

pasqua

i (the indonesian) together with my favorite german, italian, irish and lithuanian went to easter mass in the hague (read: the egg). it was an english mass which lasted a bit longer than usual because there were people being baptized, given their first communion, you name it. almost all sacraments were there, as the irish said... all we need now is a wedding in this mass...

then we went to a chinese lunch at Kee Lun Palace in Den Haag's chinatown...

how's that for an eclectic easter?

walking on air...

got an internship! phew......

i have been anxious since friday, the day the company said they would get back to me with their decision. and finally today, while dreading going to my spanish class for lack of things to talk about (in spanish), i opened my email...and there it was, i got it!

dead tired today... but even while walking in the cold i could joyfully hum a song all the way home from campus...

paris?

yes, i know, along with millions of other people, i too jumped on the bandwagon and read dan brown's the da vinci code. i am not a big fan of mystery, but i must admit that reading this book makes me want to see (or revisit) all the art works mentioned in it. just curious, i want to pay a closer attention this time. so...today i woke up with the thought... weekend in paris?
